Specialties:

For Dr. Valentina Duque, a native of Colombia, sports and exercise have always been integral parts of her life.  After sustaining a lower back injury playing soccer, Dr. Duque realized that alternative treatments such as massage and acupuncture enabled her to fully heal while alleviating her pain.  This experience sparked her interest in human anatomy and physiology and a passion for improving the quality of life of her patients.

After receiving her Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Valentina practiced in clinics that focused on pain management and orthopedic conditions.  Her scientific pursuits led her to become a researcher involved in one of the largest, most collaborative studies of acupuncture for treatment of chronic pain.  This groundbreaking study was composed of the following renowned institutions: Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Hospital.  She continues to work with her research team treating patients and conducting studies at The Institute of Family Health in New York City.

Her dual licenses in acupuncture and massage therapy enable Dr. Duque to diagnose and treat patients in distinct ways.  According to Valentina, she “listens with her hands” to people’s bodies to determine where there are blockages, tightness, or inflammation.  Dr. Duque incorporates massage with acupuncture and customizes her treatment to each individual in order to optimize results for her patients.  Valentina is always looking to expand her knowledge base as a practitioner.  She earned her Doctorate of Acupuncture from Pacific College of Health Sciences in December of 2021.

Dr. Duque is a trusted colleague of Dr. Shiu’s, and she is involved in all aspects of his patients’ healing.  Valentina has been working side by side with Dr. Shiu since he opened the Shiu Clinic in early 2019 and is one of the few fully certified Nanopuncture practitioners in the United States.

Expanding her diverse field of expertise to include neurological acupuncture was a natural career progression for Dr. Duque.  Nanopuncture enhances Valentina’s orthopedic practice and enables her to better serve populations that she has always been interested in working with, including: seniors, people with disabilities, and people with neurological disorders.

As a qEEG BrainMaster technician, Valentina administers all of the Shiu Clinic qEEG scans and neurofeedback training sessions.  In a collaborative effort, Dr. Duque and Dr. Shiu developed a unique treatment that incorporates acupuncture and qEEG neurofeedback training.

Valentina has served a broad spectrum of clients over the years, from professional athletes to hospitalized patients in palliative care to indigenous peoples during medical expeditions to Guatemala, all of whom she treats with equal attention and compassion.  Dr. Duque’s experiences with patients frequently affirm to her that she is on the correct path as a healer.
