Jeffrey Chen, a New York and Massachusetts state-licensed acupuncturist, spent six years in China where he earned his degree from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, a renowned institution with one of the most respected herbal programs in the country. Jeff particularly enjoys prescribing Chinese herbal formulas because he has felt their profound healing effects firsthand and wants to offer patients a convenient and effective alternative to taking medication for the rest of their lives.
Throughout his time in Beijing, Jeff trained with many distinguished experts in the fields of acupuncture, bodywork, and herbal medicine, including the eminent Dr. Wang Juyi (王居易), who pioneered a distinct system of acupuncture based on channel theory. Jeffrey also studied extensively with Dr. Andrew Nugent-Head, who is largely credited with bringing classical Chinese medicine teachings to America. Mr. Chen met Dr. Shiu while they were both studying in China and has been working with Dr. Shiu at the Shiu Clinic honing his Nanopuncture skills and heading the clinic’s department of herbal medicine.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeff’s expertise was brought to the Shiu Clinic to best help our patients prevent, combat, and recover from the after effects of the COVID virus. He has found Chinese herbal medicine to be an effective and reliable way to treat not only the acute symptoms of COVID, but also the long term effects that continue to plague so many of our patients.
Jeff blends western scientific thought with eastern naturalism and is able to explain the concepts of Chinese Medicine in a simple yet thorough manner. He feels that modern society needs a shift toward simplicity and minimalism and that the principles of Chinese Medicine can act as our guide. Jeff frequently reads and translates classical Chinese texts including the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine (also considered a medical classic by the National Institute of Health) and the Dao De Jing in order to deepen his understanding of classical Chinese medicine and culture. He is an avid practitioner of Buddhist and Daoist meditation and philosophy and advocates a gentler approach to medicine.
Jeffrey has over 20 years of experience in various martial arts systems and over 15 years of experience in meditation and qigong. Jeff often uses Tai Chi to help his patients recover from various types of sports injuries and joint pain.
Mr. Chen’s treatments are a unique blend of acupuncture, bodywork, herbal medicine, and functional movement; no two treatments are ever the same. He believes that simplicity and precision are the keys to medicine.
